What does acupuncture do?
Acupuncture enhances the body's healing mechanisms and promotes the body's inherent ability to heal itself and find its natural homeostasis. By stimulating the innate healing resources we all possess within, acupuncture helps correct energetic imbalances in the body. It addresses the “root” or source of the condition as well as the symptoms. Chinese medicine is preventative as well as curative. Many people come to enhance or maintain their vitality, and consider it part of a healthy lifestyle.
What does acupuncture feel like?
An acupuncture treatment feels nothing like receiving an injection with a syringe. An acupuncture needle is solid and does not inject anything into the body nor does it withdraw anything. An acupuncture needle is hair-thin and very flexible. Typical sensations one may experience at the insertion site could be heaviness, warmth, tingling, or a dull achy feeling. Sometimes you may not even know the needles are in place.
Is acupuncture safe?
New York State requires all treatment to be performed with pre-packaged, sterile, single-use, disposable needles. New York State licensed and qualified professionals are certified in Clean Needle Technique, and have extensive training in anatomy, needling risks, points and methods that are contraindicated in specific conditions such as pregnancy or neuropathy. When performed by a trained, licensed, nationally board certified professional like myself, acupuncture is extremely safe.
How long will it take to treat my condition?
Acupuncture works cumulatively and not everyone’s response to treatment is the same. The amount of visits depends on the condition and the person. Some people have very fast results and others may have a slower time responding. Generally acute conditions take a shorter course of treatment: 5-6 consecutive weekly treatments. Chronic conditions usually require more consecutive treatments over a longer period of time.
How long is a typical appointment?
The initial consultation and treatment will take approximately one hour and fifteen minutes. During this time, we will review your health history and your reason for visit followed by a physical examination where I may look at your tongue, take your pulse and palpate diagnostic areas on the body. This holistic approach provides me with the necessary information to assess your overall condition and current state of health and plan an appropriate acupuncture treatment. Follow up visits typically take an hour.
How should I prepare for my treatment?
You should come to your appointment in loose comfortable clothes, or bring a change of clothes with you such as shorts and a tank top. If you forget, a drape will be provided. Also, please have eaten a light meal at least a couple of hours before the treatment.
What to expect after treatment?
Acupuncture is a personal experience and unique to everyone. Some individuals may experience total or partial relief of their pain or symptoms after the first few treatments, while others may notice a steady, gradual improvement. In some cases, no relief may be felt at all until after several days go by. Some people may notice that their pain actually seems to be worse before it gets better. Acupuncture treatments can also offer unexpected benefits. Patients often experience not just the improvement of the initial condition being treated but other aspects of their health as well. Many patients report sleeping better, increased energy and focus, improved digestive function, stabilized mood, and easier menstrual cycles to name a few.
